Meet Owen Hegarty OAM
With more than five decades of experience in the global mining industry, Owen Hegarty has shaped some of the sector’s most successful enterprises. During his 25 years with the Rio Tinto Group, he held leadership roles across multiple commodities and regions, ultimately serving as Managing Director of Rio Tinto Asia and the company’s Australian copper and gold business.
Owen went on to found Oxiana Limited, transforming it from a junior explorer into a major Asia–Pacific metals producer that later became OZ Minerals, one of Australia’s top-performing resource companies.
He has since held executive and board positions across leading mining groups, including Fortescue Metals Group, G-Resources, and CST Mining.
Today, as Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of EMR Capital, a specialist mining private equity group with projects worldwide, Owen continues to drive growth, innovation, and sustainable development across the mining value chain. His distinguished career and leadership were recognised with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2021 for his service to the mining and minerals sector.
